I developed the model for the Smart Growth and Rural Legacy plan Statewide and implemented it in Frederick County. The element of that success is very much present in and around Burkittsville. As the Mayor of Burkittsville, I saw the need to preserve our small towns and the historic lands around the valley. Working with the State planning Department., we directed the estimate growth to the city of Brunswick and away from the farms in the valley. The State saw the value and developed a funding mechanism to purchase development

Working with the State planning Department., we directed the estimate growth to the city of Brunswick and away from the farms in the valley. The State saw the value and developed a funding mechanism to purchase development rights. This process allowed Brunswick to grow and Burkittsville to be preserved.
